Top IBM executive quits, shares suffer biggest fall in 5 months

President Jim Whitehurst is stepping down after three years at IBM, one of the first significant organisational reshuffles under Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna, who inherited the reins last year and has worked fast to reorganise IBM and return it to growth.

President Jim Whitehurst of International Business Machines Corp. is stepping down after three years at the century-old technology corporation. The stock has dropped the most in five months.

IBM announced multiple executive changes on Friday, including Whitehurst's departure. Whitehurst "decided to stand down," according to IBM, but he will remain a senior adviser. IBM made no announcement about a replacement. On the news, IBM's stock dropped 4.8 percent to $139.83.

Last April, Whitehurst was named president, marking the first time in decades that IBM separated the CEO and president roles. His cloud and cognitive software knowledge was seen as a good fit for Krishna, a longstanding IBM executive.

Many experts were surprised by Whitehurst's departure, which they viewed as a negative.

According to Moshe Katri, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, "this feels like a setback given the fact that Jim was supposed to play a key role in IBM's transformation strategy."

Prior to joining Red Hat, Whitehurst was the CEO of Delta Airlines and was a front-runner for the CEO position at IBM before Krishna's hiring.

As he restructures the company, Krishna has made a number of changes. Late last year, he announced massive job losses in Europe as he prepared to split off IBM's business that administers corporate computer systems.
